Admission Policies
Students Not Meeting Minimum English Scores
ENGLISH PATHWAY PROGRAM - start academic courses your first semester while receiving additional English and academic skills support
Undergraduate Students - TOEFL 70 - 78, IELTS 5.5, Duolingo 95-100
Graduate Students - TOEFL 70 - 78, IELTS 6, Duolingo 95-100
Students will enroll in special sections of courses to advance their English ability while still earning credit toward their graduation. In most cases, this will not delay a student's graduation timeline. Students must pass these courses at a minimum grade to be eligible for unrestricted enrollment for their second semester
CONDITIONAL ADMISSION
Students applying to an undergraduate academic program who are unable to provide proof of English or are in need of English training, can apply for conditional admission. These students will be tested upon arrival on campus and will be required to enroll in intensive English courses as necessary.
An English placement exam will be administered upon arrival and students will be placed into appropriate levels in UNI’s Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP). Students interested in conditional admission do not need to submit a separate application for CIEP, only the International Application for Admission. If admitted conditionally, our admission letter will state your bachelor’s degree major, but indicate that English language training will be provided on campus.
Conditionally admitted students can also choose to begin their studies in CIEP in the March, June, or October intake. A complete schedule can be found at internationalengagement.uni.edu/ciep/ciep-summer-orientation.
For restriction-free admission to undergraduate academic studies, please note the English proficiency requirements here.
