Admission Policies

Students Not Meeting Minimum English Scores

ENGLISH PATHWAY PROGRAM - start academic courses your first semester while receiving additional English and academic skills support

Undergraduate Students - TOEFL 70 - 78, IELTS 5.5, Duolingo 95-100
Graduate Students - TOEFL 70 - 78, IELTS 6, Duolingo 95-100

Students will enroll in special sections of courses to advance their English ability while still earning credit toward their graduation.  In most cases, this will not delay a student's graduation timeline.  Students must pass these courses at a minimum grade to be eligible for unrestricted enrollment for their second semester

CONDITIONAL ADMISSION

Students applying to an undergraduate academic program who are unable to provide proof of English or are in need of English training, can apply for conditional admission. These students will be tested upon arrival on campus and will be required to enroll in intensive English courses as necessary.

An English placement exam will be administered upon arrival and students will be placed into appropriate levels in UNI’s Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP). Students interested in conditional admission do not need to submit a separate application for CIEP, only the International Application for Admission. If admitted conditionally, our admission letter will state your bachelor’s degree major, but indicate that English language training will be provided on campus.

Conditionally admitted students can also choose to begin their studies in CIEP in the March, June, or October intake. A complete schedule can be found at internationalengagement.uni.edu/ciep/ciep-summer-orientation.

For restriction-free admission to undergraduate academic studies, please note the English proficiency requirements here.

Transfer Policies

Students can apply to transfer to UNI from any recognized U.S. or foreign post-secondary institution.

  • Transfer courses will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis except in cases of U.S. and international schools with already-established articulation agreements with UNI. A comprehensive listing of these institutions can be found at  https://java.access.uni.edu/TransferPlanIt/equiv
  • A maximum of 65 semester hours of transfer credit will be accepted from a two-year college. Credit from four-year colleges and universities is not limited. There is no minimum number of credits needed to transfer.
  • Students with less than 24 semester hours of acceptable transfer credit will be considered for admission on the basis of their high school records and college work.
  • Transfer credit can only be awarded on the basis of detailed course descriptions (syllabi) in English. A Degree Audit, with transfer credit results, will be sent to students as soon as the evaluation is complete.
  • All transfer credit from international institutions is brought in on a pass/fail basis.
  • Upon receipt of the application for admission, transcripts, and course descriptions, an evaluation will be completed of all work. Academic departments will be consulted on major credit.
  • Final credit will not appear on a student’s record until the final, official transcript is received from the issuing institution.
  • Please have your U.S. institution complete UNI's International Student Advisor Transfer Report form.

UNI accepts advanced standing credit from several evaluation sources, including:
