Waterloo Access Award

The Waterloo Access Award covers up to the full cost of tuition and fees annually at the University of Northern Iowa for up to four years, including any future increases in tuition costs. The award includes federal (i.e Pell Grant) and institutional grants.

UNI academic scholarships, state grants, and outside scholarships can be stacked on top of the Waterloo Access Award and be used toward housing and meal costs. Students are automatically considered for the award upon acceptance to UNI. 


  • Graduating HS senior from a public high school in Waterloo (Waterloo East, West, or Expo) High School entering UNI for Fall 2024
  • Pell Grant eligible as determined by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)*
  • Participate in a TRIO program and/or are part of traditionally underrepresented population.

Renewal requirements:

  • Students are required to be enrolled continuously as a full-time student and maintain good academic standing
  • Students should file the FAFSA each year and maintain Pell grant eligibility*
