We understand your unique needs as you transition from the military to the workforce, and we’re here to make your transition to college life as smooth as possible. Here are a few things you should know about us:

  • UNI was named a "Military Friendly School" by G.I. Jobs magazine, placing us in the top 20 percent of schools ensuring Veteran student success.
     
  • Nearly 270 UNI students receive Veteran Affairs (VA) benefits to help cover college costs.
     
  • Spouses and dependent children may be eligible for in-state tuition, depending on their eligibility for transfer of benefits under Chapter 33 of the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. Iowa National Guard Service members are also eligible for the in-state tuition rate.
     
  • We offer traditional on-campus classes, online and distance, and night and weekend classes to fit busy schedules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my admissions classification?

You’re considered a freshman at UNI if you’ve graduated from high school or earned your GED and have not completed any college courses. See here for admission requirements for freshmen students. A transfer student is anyone who has attended college post-high school. For transfer students, admission decisions are based on college credit GPA. For applicants with fewer than 24 college credits, an applicant's high school transcript will also be required. See here for more information.

Do I need to take the ACT or SAT?

ACT or SAT scores for all applicants are optional. If you took the ACT or SAT, you may visit their website and request that your scores be sent to UNI.

Do you accept military credit?

es, we do. All credit is evaluated by UNI’s admissions office on an individual basis. If you have Joint Services Transcripts (JST) – or CLEP or AP scores – please have them sent directly to UNI’s admissions office (002 Gilchrist Hall, Cedar Falls, IA 50614-0018).

Can my application fee be waived?

Yes, military students can request to have their $40 application fee waived. Access the form here

What is the acceptance fee? Can it be waived?

The acceptance fee is $320 which is paid when you accept your offer of admission to UNI. It cannot be waived, however, it can be deferred and covered by Veteran Affairs (VA) educational benefits.

Am I considered a resident or non-resident?

UNI charges in-state tuition and fees to any qualified veteran, as defined by the Veteran Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 (VACAA), who enrolls. Spouses and dependent children may be eligible for resident tuition. Any Iowa National Guard service member, whether a resident of Iowa or not, is also eligible.

Does UNI offer credit for service in the U.S. Armed Forces?

The admissions office will evaluate your Joint Services Transcript (JST). UNI follows ACE (American Council on Education) guidelines in granting credit.

Does UNI have any social organizations for active-duty students and veterans?

Yes. You can check out any of UNI’s 200+ student organizations, including the UNI Veterans Association (UNIVA), through our Student Involvement & Activities Center.

How do I begin the process of obtaining my VA Educational benefits?

Request a "GI Bill® benefit Certificate of Eligibility" in one of these ways:

  • Go to the GI Bill® help portal and click on Ask a Question. Fill out the online form, and submit your request.
  • Call the VA at 888-442-4551. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (ET).  If you have hearing loss, call TTY: 711.

You should provide a copy of your certificate of eligibility to one of UNI's Veterans Certifying Officers in the Registrar's Office. For assistance in obtaining your VA Educational benefits, visit here and contact one of UNI's VA School Certifying Officials (SCO).
